Abstract

With an overnight move of the learning method from face to face to online learning in the academic institutions due to the COVID-19, the effectiveness of this medium is arguable particularly for the practical based courses. This paper discusses the experience and journey in handling photography course during this pandemic time and proposes an interactive VR based training to understand photography using camera simulator. Photography has been selected as the main course based on the actual learning experience at the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), Men’s Campus Abu Dhabi, UAE. We study 10 digital camera simulators online and come out with analysis for improvement. The research analyses features, usability and interactivity of these applications. Using DSLR simulator allows students to explore and understand the concept of using camera and photography. This paper introduces the proof of concept DSLR simulator based on immersive environment and virtual reality enhanced with interactive features that mimic the actual DSLR camera. Our proposal includes the improvement of the missing features for the current simulators and it is hoped to overcome the physical and practical issue of the course.
